Martin parr is one of the 21st century most prolific and recognised British photographers.
Parr's work takes a satirical, intimate and poineant look at everyday life. Largely looking at the social classes that excise within British culture and on a larger scale the wealth of the western world and the mass consumerism attached to this culture. Notable project have been The Last Resort (a satirical look at british holiday makers, 1983–85),The Cost of Living (a penetrating look at Britain 10 years after Thatcher, 1987–89), Small World (a satire in which Parr documents mass tourism and their blunders, 1987–94) and Common Sense (documenting modern consumerist culture, 1995–99). I really enjoy Parr's approach to documentry photography from his up close and personal shooting style, to the stark effect of the external flash he uses and my personal favourite aspect the vivid colour pallet. Although there are critics of his work who belive it is vulgar and without merit, there as millions of people who disagree and I am one of them.
Although Parr's work is well known for its appearance, the bold vivid tones, deep contrasts and up close and personal shooting style I have found myself drawing more inspiration from his satire. Satire is such a brilliant tool when discussing poignant and important matters. It almost tricks people into becoming interested in matters which they otherwise would avoid. It can also make it a lot easier to take in these matters, instead of just giving you the facts you are shown the issue in a humorous/relatable context.
I think adopting Parr's satirical approach for this assignment will be very benefical, I will be coupling these satirical snap shots with a whitty strap line reminiscent of the classic holiday postcard e.g. "Take the weight of your feet" as the strap line for an image of a group of girls sat in the gutter after a night out.
I will be drawing inspiration form Parr's work throughout this assignment.
Bong Rips In The Hood
Is a photographer residing in Los angeles.
His work and the work of his fellow photographers focus around there daily lives and the weird and wonderful thing they see and do.
They work is all produced on point and shoot film cameras such as the Olympus Mju-ii, these small compact cameras give the image a raw and real aesthetic. Although the images are produced on these camera the shots are anything but devoid off quality. At point the images may be grainy but that is to be expected with a full auto film camera but this is blind sided by the beautiful compositions, bold colour pallets and endlessly bizzar subject matters.
The work produced in my opinion is straight up and down street photography, by this I mean almost every image even if a human is not present in the shot there is almost always some hint of human interaction or a feeling of human presence in the images.
I really love the candid aesthetic attached to Bong rip's work each image is powerful in it's own right and there is always something either satirical, humorous, interesting, relatable or heart warming incorporated into the images.
I will be drawing insparation from Bong Rip's work in this assignment. I will be focusing on emulating his style more than I will be using his as an influence for subject matter as his subject matter is quite different to what I will be shooting, but then again maybe once it has been translated into a british setting it may work. I will be adopting his candid of the moment shooting style and I hope to achieve images with a similar integrity. I hope to be able to bring the gritty realism into my own images.
I also hope to try out shooting on a film point and shoot as I love the effect it give to his images.
